Kitchen Renovation Stories

A Decade in the Making

The Hamilton family had spent nearly 10 years planning the renovation to their charming Tudor Revival.  Their great attention to detail led to a well planned renovation and a new kitchen which is stylish, but also packed with great storage ideas.

Details and moldings pick up the Craftsman influence of the home's interior.  Both the range hood and window valance were designed with a slight arch to soften the long lines of cabinetry

Base cabinets and island were crafted in cherry with a custom stain, while upper cabinets are a soft yellow (Benjamin Moore's "Morning Light").

Thoughtful Storage

Having a decade for planning resulted in some clever storage ideas in this kitchen.  A composting container was custom crafted, and placed directly under the cutting board at the prep sink.

What was otherwise hard-to-use space over the oven was made into a storage rack with vertical dividers for muffin pans and other large baking items.  The other half holds less frequently used appliances.  Doors are designed to look identical when closed.

Another smart use of storage was this shallow wall cabinet, built into the side of the oven cabinet.  It is used to organize school papers and to provide cell phones with a space to charge.  Panel is magnetic white board, and the door recesses behind the oven.  Two built in outlets provide space for all those little transformers!  There is also a shelf at the bottom which flips up so the door can close.

The layout of the kitchen dictated fairly narrow cabinets on either side of the range.  These were used cleverly as spice storage, to maximize the small space's utility:

At the end of the island, refrigerator drawers were added for snacks and drinks for both adults and kids.  Its clever location keeps kids out from underfoot while rooting around for a snack...

Toe kick drawers were used for large serving platters:

Both sinks have tip out trays for sponges and brushes:

Pull out baskets are handy for food items not requiring refrigeration.  We decided to put a door on ours to give the end of the island a more streamlined look.

Dishes and flatware presented another organizing challenge, because upper cabinet space was at a premium.  A custom pegged dish drawer was crafted, making access by the kids much easier.

A custom drawer organizer was created to house both flatware and cooking utensils.

Two trash containers were squeezed into one drawer, since recycling is mandatory in Westchester county.

A large pantry was crafted in the corner next to the oven for food staples.  Its capacity is doubled by the internal swinging shelves.

Fun blown glass pendant lights add color and punch to the kitchen's island.
